I owe money, but I’m not “IN Debt”.

Before trying to understand what causes us to get into debt, it might be a good idea to clearly define what debt really is.

Dictionary.com defines debt as “An obligation to pay or perform something”.  Which means being in debt would be being in the state of obligation to pay or perform something, regardless of the amount.  That last bit was added by me to illustrate that it is possible to be in debt and not realise it, especially for those who believe that there is a certain amount of debt that qualifies being “in debt”.  Let’s make it simple:

“If you owe money, you are in debt!”

I think as human beings we have the ability to convince ourselves of almost anything.  Our minds can creatively come up with all kinds of justifications, excuses and alternate explanations.  We need to get past this habit of fooling ourselves and be brutally honest with ourselves.  If we don’t appreciate other people feeding us shady pretext, then how can we accept it from ourselves?

Here are some popular statements that we use to fool ourselves:

“I’m not really ‘in debt’ I could pay her back anytime, I just haven’t yet.”

“I have a payment plan in place now so I’m not really ‘in debt’.”

“I owe money, but it’s okay because I am not paying interest.”

“It’s okay because I know the exact date that I will be paying off what I owe.”

“I owe some money but not as much as most people.”

“I pay more than the monthly minimum payment, hence I am not ‘in debt’.”

Seriously?

Here is the bottom line, and I am saying this only because I want freedom for you from these invisible chains that bind us, all such statements are useless.  They come from the part of us that causes us to do bad deeds.

Let’s resolve to be honest with ourselves today about our financial condition and make it a priority, nay an obligation upon ourselves to get rid of any and all debt as soon as possible.   We owe ourselves this honesty and it is the best thing that we can do for ourselves, InshaAllah.

May Allah Subhana waTa’ala aid us in such honesty, and allow us to eliminate our debt for His sake Subhana waTa’ala… Ameen.

Wasalaamu Alaikum WaRahmatullah.
